Scottish Borders based Rachel Meehan reaches out to new markets at the British Craft Trade Fair for exclusively British-made products. 4th to 7th April 2020, Stand P37
‘Rachel Meehan, pictures and words…’ will be making her debut exhibiting at the British Craft Trade Fair at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate. BCTF is the largest show of its kind focusing on exclusive high-end British-made products which include handmade ceramics, porcelain, fashion accessories and jewellery, glass, metalwork, woodwork, textiles, greetings cards and fine art.
For the first time ever in 2020, BCTF will open to the public, for one day only, on Saturday April 4, ahead of the trade show opening on Sunday April 5 – Tuesday April 7. Visitors will have the chance to browse and buy from an unrivalled selection of products, straight from authentic British designer-makers and small independent companies.
Speaking about the event Rachel said, “I set up the business in 2017 and did my first trade show in Scotland that year. It was a great experience, however this is the first time I have ventured over the Border to show my work! I started with cards and prints then expanded my range to include, gift wrap and ceramic coasters. At BCTF I will also be showing some new kitchen and dining items (tea towels, aprons, table runners and placemats). I am looking forward to gauging the public and buyers’ reactions to the new products.”
Ranges include, Bold Blooms and Fabulous Feathers. Bold Blooms are based on illustrations of plants from Rachel’s garden and include popular favourites such as iris and lily to the more exotic passion flower and echinacea. Fabulous Feathers is a collection of exotic bird illustrations showing off their beautiful plumage.
“My work is very detailed and each design can take many days to complete. My main inspirations are from the natural world; when I am not drawing the plants I am growing them! I am fascinated by the rich colours nature has to offer, so exotic birds are also a favourite.”
Rachel trained as a fine artist (printmaker specialising in screen printing) and completed her Post Graduate at Glasgow School of Art. This training has greatly influenced her illustrative technique and enabled her to create images which are unique in their style. The work, inspired by the colours found in nature, is distinctive and bold, adding a touch of sophistication to any retail display. Rachel offers small order quantities and a personal service to all her outlets.
BCTF organiser, Margeret Bunn, says: “We are delighted to welcome Rachel to the exhibition for the first time. She is an exceptionally talented designer and one of a number from Scotland who are participating in the show. There are many indications that people want to support more local, sustainable businesses and are seeking beautifully designed British products which they know are of sound provenance. Research is backed up by strong anecdotal feedback we are receiving from retailers visiting the show and followers on our social media sites. If ever there was a time to support our heritage industries and independent designer-makers, then this is it!”
